Why Houston Sounds Like This

By Emani · May 20, 2026

Houston does not rush. That is the first thing that changed my music when I moved here from Tulsa. Tempos dropped. Phrases got longer. I stopped filling every bar.

The independent artist community here is genuinely collaborative — engineers, players, stylists, and photographers who build careers without waiting for permission from a coast. Half of Auntie Energy exists because someone in this city said yes to a session on a Tuesday.

Neo-Soul in Houston is not nostalgia. It is a working, present-tense scene of women writing about healing, money, motherhood, faith, and freedom over live instrumentation. I am proud to be counted in it while still carrying Tulsa in my vowels.
